Since I don’t have the resources to put macOS antivirus utilities to the test with real-world malware, any available lab results are like gold for me. Intego works on 10.9 (Mavericks) or higher, while ProtectWorks goes all the way back to 10.6 (Snow Leopard). Trend Micro wants 10.14 (Mojave), for example, while F-Secure, Kaspersky, and McAfee all require 10.15 (Catalina).Īt the relaxed end of the spectrum, a few antivirus tools still support ancient macOS versions for those who can’t (or won’t) upgrade. Other Mac antivirus tools need an even newer OS version. Most Mac owners keep the OS up to date, so that shouldn’t be a problem. To install this free product your Mac must run macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) or later. Avast One Essential Operating System Requirements This is your go-to page when you have a specific task or feature in mind. It organizes the features into three groups: Device Protection, Smooth Performance, and Online Privacy. For example, right after installation it exhorts you to run your first Smart Scan.Ĭlicking Explore in the simple menu at the left brings up a page that gives you access to all the program’s features. Rather, it devotes the home page to a topic that needs your attention. It’s quite a change.Īlso as on Windows, Avast doesn’t use the home page for a fixed display of security status. Where space permits, the line drawings include happy people. Instead of the old dark background, it’s light and airy, with rounded buttons and whimsical line drawings daubed with pastel colors. Just as on Windows, this new product looks very different from Avast products of previous years. Avast and AVG do use the same antivirus engine and have done so since long before the merger. Gen also owns AVG and Avira, but so far all the brands continue to exist independently. In late 2022, Avast completed a merger with Norton, forming a new company called Gen Digital. However, when you can get the new Avast One Essential for free, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to settle for the smaller feature set of the older Avast Security for Mac instead. All of Avast’s previously released products remain available for download or purchase. However, the latest version, reviewed here, is strictly in the US to start with. The Avast One product line is currently offered in Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland, the UK, and the US. It’s an excellent competitor of our Editors' Choice winners for Mac antivirus, Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac and Norton 360 Deluxe for Mac. Even in this free edition, you get a surprisingly rich collection of features. With Avast One Essential, you don’t pay a penny, and you get substantially more than bare-bones antivirus, with plenty of added tools for privacy and security. Antivirus protection for your Mac is necessary breaking the bank to pay for it is not. They aren’t, and macOS-focused malware takes advantage of that misunderstanding. But all too many Mac users blithely assume their devices are immune. Windows and Android don’t have the baked-in security that Apple’s platforms do, so there’s plenty of malware action for those two. The people who write malware are out for just one thing-easy money. Best Hosted Endpoint Protection and Security Software.
